In the inaugural edition of Snackology, I’m diving into Taco Bell’s new Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato.

Taco Bell launched its Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato on Tuesday. It’s the latest in the growing line of Baja Blast products. The soda flavor is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and has expanded its reach beyond just Taco Bell locations, now available year round wherever you can find Mountain Dew. (Allegedly. I can rarely find the diet version in stores.)

Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato is a Taco Bell exclusive. So I found it at Taco Bell.

What I paid

Each gelato was $3.99. (I bought four of them.)

My thoughts

Once I got past the absurdity of heading to Taco Bell at 11:50 a.m. on the Tuesday after a holiday weekend already filled with poor eating choices (and a healthy dose of “do you really need to do this?” from my wife), I picked up four of the gelato cups and stashed them in our freezer.

I decided to save my first Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato for after our daughter went to bed. It’s not like I was going to eat one for lunch. I do have standards.

Before we get to how these guys tasted, I need to let you know that the Baja Blast Gelato cups are smaller than you might expect. If Taco Bell were to ever classify an item as a palate cleanser, this would be it. When I did open one of the gelato cups, I was surprised to find a tiny purple spoon hiding under the lid.

Despite being mocked as mouth wash or even windshield wiper fluid for the past two decades, I’m a fan of Baja Blast. I have a few cans in the fridge and will instinctively open one whenever I have Taco Bell dropped off. If there was a target market for these gelato cups, I’m part of it.

Taco Bell describes the Baja Blast Gelato as the “perfect frozen treat.” I didn’t get that vibe during my first few scoops. Once I dug past the surface layer of the gelato, though, the Baja Blast flavor came on strong. I honestly could’ve opened a second one after I finished. But like I said before, I do have standards.

Final verdict: BUY

It’s frozen Baja Blast. If you like Baja Blast and you don’t mind spending four bucks on a gimmick, pick one of these fellas up. Do it quickly since Taco Bell’s disclaimer notes that Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato is available in “very limited quantities.”
