Those cowards canceled ‘The Acolyte’
Lucasfilm gave toxic ‘Star Wars’ fans a win. PLUS: RDJ talks Doctor Doom, Mattel wants an animated ‘Barbie’ movie, and Lionsgate may have used AI to get fake critics quotes.
Welcome to the last summer edition of Popculturology for 2024. Please give the newsletter a good review on Rotten Tomatoes. I really want to juice the site’s new Popcornmeter score.
Lucasfilm abandons The Acolyte
When The Acolyte wrapped up its ambitious first season, I warned Lucasfilm: “Do not repeat what you did with The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm. Don’t abandon this show. Don’t sacrifice yet another story that features people of color to score points with this toxic crowd.”
Earlier this week, news broke that there would be no second season of the show. Lucasfilm had canceled The Acolyte.
The news led to an outpouring of disappointment and feelings of betrayal on social media from people who had wanted to see where Leslye Headland would take The Acolyte in the future — and from people who finally saw characters who represented them in a Star Wars story.
