With zero real competition, ‘The Nun II’ wins the weekend again
Sylvester Stallone and his ‘Expendfourables’ fails the box office challenge.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Sept. 22-24, 2023.
1. The Nun II
Weekend gross: $8.4M
Total domestic gross: $69.2M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 42
What a dud of a weekend at the box office. The Nun II held on for its third straight No. 1, but the latest film in the Conjuring universe owes the victory to the lack of any real competition.
The box office should pick up next weekend, with The Creator and Saw X opening and Dumb Money going wide.
2. Expend4bles
Weekend gross: $8.3M
Total domestic gross: $8.3M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
This was the worst opening weekend for the Expendables franchise. After an almost decade-long absence, Expendfourables could only muster up $8.3 million in its debut — a little more than half of the $15.9 million that The Expendables 3 opened with in 2014.
3. A Haunting in Venice
Weekend gross: $6.3M
Total domestic gross: $25.4M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 56
A Haunting in Venice is in lockstep with the pace of its predecessor, Death on the Nile. Through its first two weekends, the previous film in Kennth Branaugh’s Hercules Poirot series had grossed $25,290,673. A Haunting in Venice? $25,352,729.
4. The Equalizer 3
Weekend gross: $4.7M
Total domestic gross: $81.3M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 35
The third Equalizer film, however, has dipped off the pace established by the first two movies in that franchise. Both The Equalizer and The Equalizer 2 had cross the $89 million mark through their fourth weekends. Denzel Washington’s latest, though, now falls about $8 million behind that tracking.
5. Barbie
Weekend gross: $3.2M
Total domestic gross: $630.5M
Last weekend: 5th
Percent drop: 16
A few weekends ago, I thought we were going to see Barbie drop out of the top five. With its tenth weekend in theaters now in the books, Barbie managed to hang around for another weekend.
