Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Aug. 4-6, 2023.

1. Barbie

Weekend gross: $53M
Total domestic gross: $459.4M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 43

Barbie easily held off new releases Meg 2: The Trench and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem this weekend, adding an addition $53 million to its domestic haul.

Greta Gerwig’s latest film is closing on on the $1 billion worldwide mark, with Deadline reporting that Barbie should accomplish that feat by the end of Sunday.

Barbie is now the second highest grossing film of 2023, with its $459.4 million trailing only the $574.2 million generated by The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier this year. Does Barbie have another $100 million+ left in its tank? The film currently sits at No. 24 on the all-time domestic list (Mario is at No. 14). Could Barbie make that jump?

2. Meg 2: The Trench

Weekend gross: $30M
Total domestic gross: $30M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Even though the box office is still Barbie’s world, this weekend had another fantastic performance by the runners-up. According to the Sunday estimates, Meg 2: The Trench managed to barely hold off Oppenheimer in its third weekend and Mutant Mayhem in its debut weekend.

Meg 2 opened considerably behind 2018’s The Meg, which hit theaters with a $45.4 million opening weekend.

3. Oppenheimer

Weekend gross: $28.7M
Total domestic gross: $228.5M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 39

Oppenheimer now sits at No. 4 on director Christopher Nolan’s all-time domestic ranking, passing the $205.3 million grossed by Batman Begins. While his other two Batman films (The Dark Knight with $535 million and The Dark Knight Rises with $448.1 million) are probably out of reach, Oppenheimer does has a shot at passing Inception’s $292.6 million.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Weekend gross: $28M
Total domestic gross: $43M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles: Mutant Mayhem opened on Wednesday of last week, which meant its weekend haul was a bit diluted. The acclaimed animated film burned off $15 million (including what could’ve been Thursday preview money) that could’ve gone toward Mutant Mayhem’s weekend gross.

5. Haunted Mansion

Weekend gross: $9M
Total domestic gross: $42M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 63

The new Haunted Mansion is running behind 2003’s The Haunted Mansion, which scored $9.4 million its second weekend.

Next weekend

Unless I’m missing something on the calendar, there isn’t a big new release next weekend. (There’s some kind of Gran Turismo preview event on Tuesday, but that one doesn’t open until Aug. 25.) It should be another easy win for Barbie.

That’s the end of this edition of Popculturology. Thanks for reading the newsletter. If you already are a subscriber, please consider becoming a supporter by upgrading your account.
