‘A Haunting in Venice’ gives ‘The Nun II’ a scare
Kenneth Branagh’s third Agatha Christie adaptation almost beat the latest movie in the ‘Conjuring’ universe.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Sept. 15-17, 2023.
1. The Nun II
Weekend gross: $14.7M
Total domestic gross: $56.5M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 55
It was a close one between The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice, but the latest movie in the Conjuring universe barely held on for the win over Hercule Poirot and company.
Despite the weekend win, The Nun II continues to track behind its predecessor. The Nun’s domestic haul through two weekends clocked in at $85.1 million, putting the sequel almost $30 million behind its pace.
2. A Haunting in Venice
Weekend gross: $14.5M
Total domestic gross: $14.5M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
The films in director/star Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot franchise have never seen massive debuts. A Haunting in Venice, an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party, opened with $14.5 million, less than $2 million more than Death on the Nile debut at last year but roughly half of what Murder on the Orient Express grossed its opening weekend in 2017.
3. The Equalizer 3
Weekend gross: $7.2M
Total domestic gross: $73.7M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 40
Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua’s Equalizer franchise is remarkably consistent at the box office. The Equalizer through three weekends? $79.9 million. The Equalizer 2 through three weekends? $79.8 million. The Equalizer 3 through three weekends? $73.7 million.
4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3
Weekend gross: $4.7M
Total domestic gross: $18.6M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 53
The original My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie being such a surprise hit makes the weekend-to-weekend comparisons for the franchise very misleading. Based on the first film’s $1.6 million gross through two weekends, you’d never know that it went on to gross $374.9 million, vastly outdoing the $92.1 million lifetime domestic gross of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.
5. Barbie
Weekend gross: $4M
Total domestic gross: $626.1M
Last weekend: 5th
Percent drop: 30
Barbie isn’t ready to drop out of the top five just yet. With its ninth weekend in theaters now wrapped up, Barbie’s domestic haul ticks up to $626.1 million. Greta Gerwig’s massive blockbuster has now jumped The Avengers on the all-time domestic chart.
