With no major new releases to open the year, Disney’s ‘Lion King’ prequel barely squeaks past Sonic and his buddies.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Jan. 3-5, 2025.

1. Mufasa: The Lion King

Weekend gross: $23.8M
Total domestic gross: $168.6M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 35

After finishing behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the past two weekends (and I guess bragging rights for barely beating Sonic over the five-day Christmas weekend?), Mufasa: The Lion King finally got a legit three-day weekend victory. Disney’s “live”-action prequel squeaked by the third Sonic movie by a little more than $2 million.

Mufasa’s domestic box office total stands at $168.6 million — which is still way less than the whopping $191.8 million that its predecessor debuted at in 2019.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Weekend gross: $21.2M
Total domestic gross: $187.5M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 43

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had to settle for second place this weekend, but that’s only a blip of bad news for the franchise. The third Sonic movie has already passed Sonic the Hedgehog’s $146.1 million domestic haul and is just over $3 million away from matching Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s $187.5 million total.

The Sonic franchise crossed both the $500 million domestic total and $1 billion worldwide total this week too.
