Happy Saturday! I’m writing this special edition of Popculturology from the luxurious waiting room of a windshield replacement shop where the amenities include items like an empty fridge that once held bottled water and not one but two water fountains that don’t work.

Despite knowing that I had to be up early today for this car appointment, I stayed up late to follow along with Disney’s D23 Expo. The studio announced a ton of news across Walt Disney Animation, Star Wars, Marvel Studios, Pixar Studios and the live-action movies at Walt Disney Studios. (Yes, they’re still counting Mufasa: The Lion as live action …)

While I wonder what the other guy in this waiting room was thinking showing up for a two- to three-hour appointment without any snacks, let’s jump into D23’s news …

Moana 2

This is a great trailer. I still have my doubts about Moana 2, given that it began its life as a Disney+ series and was recobbled together to make a major feature film, but the new trailer, complete with the reveal that Moana now has a little sister, has definitely bumped up my hope for the film.

Zootopia 2

I like Zootopia. I just don’t think it was the masterpiece that a lot of people hold it to be. The sequel is going to introduce reptiles, with Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan voicing Gary the Snake.
