‘Moana 2’ cruises past $300M with a dominant second weekend
The Disney sequel led another big weekend at the box office, with ‘Wicked’ and ‘Gladiator II’ putting up great numbers too.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Dec. 6-8, 2024.
1. Moana 2
Weekend gross: $52M
Total domestic gross: $300M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 63
After dominating the five-day Thanksgiving weekend with $190.6 million, Moana 2 added another $52 million this past weekend, pushing the animated sequel past the $300 million mark.
Moana 2 has already blown past the $248.8 million domestic haul of its predecessor (and its $600 million worldwide gross is closing in on Moana’s $686.1 million worldwide gross). The sequel is now at No. 4 on Walt Disney Animation Studios’s all-time chart (not including Pixar films), trailing only Frozen II ($477.4 million), Frozen ($401 million) and Zootopia ($341.3 million).
The animated sequel currently ranks No. 21 all-time for animated movies, between Up ($293 million) and Shrek the Third ($322.7 million).
Moana 2 is also one of 2024’s biggest hits, ranking No. 5 at the moment. Will its momentum take it past Wicked’s $320.5 million?

2. Wicked
Weekend gross: $34.9M
Total domestic gross: $320.5M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 57
Yes, at the moment, Wicked is the fourth biggest film of 2024. The musical added another $34.9 million over its third weekend in theaters, putting it a little more than $40 million behind Despicable Me 4’s $361 million on this year’s domestic chart.
Based on The Numbers’ list of movies that are based on musicals or operas, Wicked has easily blown past every movie in that category. Director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway play is by far the most successful musical/opera movie (as long as you don’t adjust for inflation), sitting at more than $100 million beyond Grease’s $188.6 million.
