It’s showtime for ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ with a $110M opening weekend
Fans of the Michael Keaton character probably won’t have to wait another 36 years for the next sequel.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Sept. 6-8, 2024.
1. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Weekend gross: $110M
Total domestic gross: $110M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
I’ve seen a lot of “do we actually need this sequel?” going around online when it comes to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. While we can still have that conversation when it comes to the creative reasons behind the sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s $110 million opening weekend definitely justified Warner Bros.’ decision on this one.
That $110 million number easily gave Beetlejuice Beetlejuice the third biggest opening weekend of 2024. Only Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4 million) and Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) had bigger debuts.
Putting aside inflation, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s $110 million debut not only outdid Beetlejuice’s $8 million opening weekend, it passed the original movie’s entire $74.5 million domestic run.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the second biggest open weekend of director Tim Burton’s career, trailing only Alice in Wonderland’s $116.1 million. The movie was also the second biggest debut for Michael Keaton as a lead actor, behind Spider-Man: Homecoming’s $117 million. And the sequel was easily the best opening weekend for both Winona Ryder (her previous best was Mr. Deeds’ $37.2 million) and Jenna Ortega (her previous best was Scream VI’s $44.4 million).
I can’t imagine Warner Bros. is going to wait another four decades to get the inevitable Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice into theaters.

2. Deadpool & Wolverine
Weekend gross: $7.2M
Total domestic gross: $614M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 53
With its seventh weekend now in the books, Deadpool & Wolverine drops to the No. 2 spot for just the second time. The Ryan Reynolds film is less than $10 million behind The Avengers ($623.4 million) to rank No. 5 among MCU films.
Deadpool & Wolverine now sits at No. 15 on the all-time domestic chart (behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s $620.2 million) and No. 22 on the all-time worldwide chart (its $1.287 billion trails Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s $1.308 billion).
