It’s ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ … Beetlejuice as ‘Transformers One’ opens at No. 2

The animated ‘Transformers’ film was expect to debut at No. 1, but the Michael Keaton sequel had just enough (Beetle)juice to deny it a win.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Sept. 20-22, 2024.

1. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Weekend gross: $26M
Total domestic gross: $226.8M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 49

This weekend was supposed to be the dawn of a new era for the Transformers franchise. Instead, it was Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at No. 1 for the third time in a row. So, you know, Beetlejuice … Beetlejuice … Beetlejuice.

Is he behind me? Or does that work only in Community?

While denying Transformers One a box office victory this weekend, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is now the sixth biggest domestic hit of 2024. The long-awaited sequel has skipped over Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($196.4 million), Kung Fu Panda 4 ($193.59 million) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($193.57 million) since last weekend.

2. Transformers One

Weekend gross: $25M
Total domestic gross: $25M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Despite an 89 percent critics score and 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Transformers One stalled out with a $25 million opening weekend. That’s above just Bumblee’s $21.7 million debut in 2018 and behind the $61 million that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened with last year.

Paramount positioned the animated Transformers One as a new, kid-friendly restart for the franchise. As we’ve seen from Inside Out 2 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there’s a huge demand for PG. For some reason, this one didn’t click when it came to turning positive reviews into box office dollars. I’m really hoping The Wild Robot, another animated film, is a box office hit when it opens next weekend.
