‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ busts a $45.2 million weekend
The latest ‘Ghostbusters’ movie scares up an opening weekend very similar to the past two installments in the franchise.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of March 22-24, 2024.
1. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Weekend gross: $45.2M
Total domestic gross: $45.2M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
It’s 2024, and bustin’ still makes people feel good. And going by domestic opening weekends, it makes roughly the same number of people feel good, with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s $45.2 million debut being almost identical to the $44 million that Ghostbusters: Afterlife opened to in 2021 and the $46 million that Ghostbusters: Answer the Call opened to in 2016.
Yes, the Ghostbusters movie with female leads — the one that broke the minds of fanboys across the Internet — still holds the record of the biggest opening weekend for the franchise.
Frozen Empire (and the 2010s/2020s batch of Ghostbusters movies) still has a lot of work to do if it wants to catch the lofty records set by the original Ghostbusters film back in 1984. (That film’s $242.6 million domestic and $295.6 million hauls have yet to be broken by any of the sequels or reboot.)

Total domestic gross: $233.4M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 38
After spending the past two weekends behind Kung Fu Panda 4, Dune: Part Two held onto the No. 2 spot this weekend as Kung Fu Panda 4 slipped to No. 3.
The second Dune film has easily topped the domestic gross of its predecessor, more than doubling the $110 million that the first Dune movie brought in in 2021.
On the worldwide front, Dune: Part Two stands at $574.4 million, making it all but certain this masterpiece crosses the $600 million mark.
