‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘The Brutalist’ and ‘Wicked’ lead 2025 Oscar nominations

Emilia Peréz, the French film starring Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez, topped the nominations in thirteen categories. The AI-assisted The Brutalist and the musical adaptation Wicked were close behind with ten nominations each. (The Wild Robot scored three nominations, but sadly not one for Best Picture.)

Last year, I wrote that I didn’t think the Best Picture nominees were as audience friendly as past years. But last year had Barbenheimer. Wicked and Dune: Part Two were huge box office hits ... but that’s kind of it from this year’s batch of Best Picture nominees.
Once again, I wanted to The Wild Robot break through here. One of these years, the Academy will show that it respects animation. I guess it’s just not this year.
