Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2024.

1. Deadpool & Wolverine

Weekend gross: $15.2M
Total domestic gross: $599.5M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 17

I took a weekend off from writing The Box Office Report only to return to see that Deadpool & Wolverine, now wrapping up its sixth weekend in theaters, is still in first place.

Deadpool & Wolverine is just a few bucks away from becoming the 16th film in domestic box office history to cross the $600 million mark, an achievement it should notch on Labor Day. It’ll join Inside Out 2 as the second film under the Disney banner to do so in 2024.

Among MCU movies, Deadpool & Wolverine sits at No. 6 on the domestic chart. The latest film in the megafranchise should have the legs to pass The Avengers’ $623.4 million, but it’ll face new competition when Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens this week.

2. Alien: Romulus

Weekend gross: $9.3M
Total domestic gross: $88.8M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 43

Alien: Romulus already has the second biggest domestic box office haul for any film in the Alien franchise, passing the $85.2 million grossed by Aliens in 1986. Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the series should join Prometheus ($126.5 million) as the only films in the franchise to crack $100 million.
