‘Captain America: Brave New World’ hulks out for an $88.5M weekend

A debut this big would usually be good, but not for the MCU. Or the ‘Captain America’ movies.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Feb. 14-16, 2025.

1. Captain America: Brave New World

Weekend gross: $88.5M
Total domestic gross: $88.5M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Captain America: Brave New World won the weekend, easily blowing away its competition with an $88.5 million debut.

So why does it feel like the latest entry in the MCU actually lost?

In addition to being a disappointing and disjoined movie, Brave New World’s $88.5 million haul isn’t impressive when compared to its fellow MCU films. It ranks No. 24 out of 35 MCU opening weekends, slotting in between Spider-Man: Far From Home’s $92.6 million and Thor: The Dark World’s $85.7 million.

Among Captain America movies, Brave New World outpaces only the original Captain America: The First Avenger’s $65.1 million — not a big accomplishment when you remember how that movie came out in the days when the MCU was still establishing what exactly it was supposed to be. These movies weren’t tentpoles were massive tentpole features yet.

The second and third Captain America movies would go on to be major hits for Marvel Studios. Captain America: The Winter Soldier almost broke the $100 million mark with a $95 million debut while Captain America: Civil War (which was basically an Avengers movie) dominated the box office with a $179.1 million weekend. Brave New World didn’t even capture half of that number its first weekend.

2. Paddington in Peru

Weekend gross: $13M
Total domestic gross: $13M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Gonna be honest with everyone … I had no idea the new Paddington movie was coming out this weekend. I get counterprogramming an MCU movie, but it feels like Paddington in Peru got dumped here, especially when it already premiered in Great Britain months ago.

The Paddington movies have never been major box office players, and the franchise’s third entry opened right between the first Paddington’s $19 million and Paddington 2’s $11 million first weekends.
